The two from the Fillmore West 1969 run (2-28 and 3-2) are both excellent. 3-2 is on the 3-disc issue from that run, and the 10-disc set has both. Also, these shows are again (I think) circulating as bittorrents. 3-2 is longer, more confident and hard-charging. On 2-28, the boys have to work harder to find common ground in the jamming, and as a result produce some interesting moments. It's a favorite of mine for concentrated listening. 3-2 closes with the Live/Dead feedback, while 2-28 closes with a feedback jam that is every bit as interesting.

The April 1969 run at the Ark offers some tasty Alligators, Cautions...

try the 21st...

http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-04-21.sbd.clugston.66.sbeok.shnf

then read what direwolf wrote in his review of the April 4, '69 about Alligator:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-04-05.sbd.miller.18701.sbesok.shnf

and he champions the april23 Alligator/Caution as well...

http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-04-23.sbd.wise.70.sbeok.shnf

I like to go back even farther, to the weirdness of the Shrine Alligator/Caution of 8-23-1968,

and then get really psyched out on the March 16, 1968 Alligator!

I'm looking for the ultimate Eleven, for a playlist project...

help?!

D&M:
CPW is always right on, and you can never go wrong with the
4-20s'69 ARK pick
But IMHO, I prefer (SORRY NO HYPERLINK) the Avalon 1-25-69
or the Stanley 2-7-69. The Stanley's setlist, and performance, is to die for. The China Cat Jam in the middle is what makes it for me, but I digest....

Other famous Alligators include:
1-22-68 Eagles Ball room, Seattle

12-12-69 Thelma Theatre, LA (another personal favorite, the disc I labeled "Pigpens Showcase")

1-16- 70 Springer's Inn, Portland OR

4-29-71 Fillmore East

The "Caution" jam actually came from a development of "Mystic Eyes" performed by the band "THEM"
Pigpen just added different words to the motif.

Exemplary Cautions include:
2-14-68 (I think you are familiar)
3-16-68 Carousel,SF
12-12-69 Thelma, LA (a coinsidence? I think not!)
2-14-70 (I think you are familiar)
4-14-72 Tivoli, Copenhagen (who hasnt wet themselves over this one?)
10-19-74 Winterland

And Cream-puff-war
I humbly submit some ELEVENS that might strike your fancy:
3-16-68
1-26-69
3-1-69
3-29-69
6-13-69
11--8-69
12-30-69 (duh)
1-16-70

Also, some Phil&Friends do some really exceptional Elevens (as long as Molo is behind the kit)
5-19-2006 P&F:
The DVD "Live at the Warfield" release is not THE best but does contain some fabulous music.
And it does contain a Saint Stephen>The Eleven>Caution segment that you might like.

(NFA>Caution)

11-6-70, unfortunately the link doesn't seem to be working, but it's perhaps the best Caution of the year.

4-29-71 has a nice post-Alligator jam, but it's better heard on the official release than the poor AUD on the Archive.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd71-03-18.sbd.yerys.1663.sbeok.shnf
(the only 1971 Caution)

http://www.archive.org/details/gd72-04-29.aud.vernon.5250.sbeok.shnf
(Caution! - excellent AUD)

4-14-72 has a great Caution too but the AUD here is poor; it was released as a bonus track on the remastered Europe '72.

The 3-22-72 Caution was also released on a bonus disc for one of the DP's.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-09-18.sbd.miller.20732.sbeok.shnf
(a '74 Caution jam with a very different approach)

I think this is all the good ones on the Archive - I didn't include ones that were badly cut, or just had the intro song without the jam, or were just brief little jams into another song. "1-27-67" and 9-15-67 just had too poor sound to be recommended; others from late '68/early '69 I omitted since surrounding dates had better versions.
I hope these are enough recommendations to start with?

a fresh perspective on the good ol stuff...
Caution too!

Alligator - 2-14-68, I think he meant, not 2-14-70?

Both tip top versions tho!

lots to chew on for days and days - great calls everyone!

Oops, I forgot a good one! This show's not so well-known because of the challenging sound quality, but it has a fierce Alligator jam:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-07-11.sbd.hanno.4644.sbeok.shnf

Good calls on some of the shorter Alligators I left off my list, like 8-21-68, 1-25-69, and 4-21-69.
There are a few though that don't really have "Alligator jams", like 4-5-69 goes straight into feedback after the drums, and 1-16-70 goes into an Eleven jam. I like my Alligators to stretch out.....

firing up the old brain pan just listening to the runaway locomotive Eleven Cliff called;

and then the amzing Jan 22 1968 Alligator!

"...Great 16-minute Alligator to open! ...and they visit all the parts heard on Anthem (by Tahoe, they weren't vocalizing the "Alligator!" chorus anymore)".

Hey CPW, sorry--missed the call on the Eleven, one of my all time favorite songs. I am not as much of a fan of Alligator/Caution, though do love the boys, kazoos or not, in the opening portion of Alligator. And those CLIFF and others mentioned are fine examples, yours for the Ark I know well.

Now, for the 11, I think that the one from 2-11-69 is one of the best, the one on the commercial release ("Schoolgirl" title or some such...sorry, don't have it here in front of me).

Give it a spin and let me know what you think. CLIFF suggested the one from the next night, above, I think, and you almost can't go wrong with the ones from fall 68 thru Feb 69...getting the vocals just right is often the toughest part (poor Phil--still love the guy for trying to get that difficult part right).

Enjoy.

I have a tape off the CD I bought of Live at The Fillmore East 2-11-69, you're right, that is a good show, great Eleven.

Dig the early version from 1-22-68 btw.

10-12-68 is a great version too.
